Nurses play a crucial role in the healthcare system, and their dedication, care, and hard work are truly invaluable. We understand that shift changes are a natural part of the job, and for those coming in at 10 PM, it may feel like daytime to them. However, it’s important to remember that hospitals are a place of healing, and patients are essentially customers who deserve a calm and peaceful environment, especially after enduring long hours without sleep, medical procedures, and continuous monitoring.

While the lobby area of the hospital is kept quiet and organized, it’s equally essential that the nurses’ station operates under similar standards of consideration, especially when patients’ rooms are in close proximity. Unfortunately, during my father’s recent stay, the nurses’ station was anything but quiet. He had been awake for 23 hours straight, undergoing various treatments and monitoring due to a heart condition. When he finally got a moment to rest, it was impossible because the nurses’ station was filled with loud conversations about insomnia, cookies, and other non-work-related topics.

The noise level was so high that it came off as unprofessional and inconsiderate, making it incredibly difficult for a patient in need of rest to get any sleep. We acknowledge that healthcare professionals are human and need to decompress during their shifts, but it should not come at the expense of patient care and comfort. If this is an acceptable standard, then the hospital should seriously consider providing patients with wireless noise-canceling earbuds to drown out the excessive noise that seems to permeate from the nurses’ station.

Patients with heart conditions or those recovering from invasive procedures need peace, rest, and a quiet environment to heal properly. Rest is not a luxury but a necessity, and the noise levels my father experienced were far from conducive to a healing environment. We urge the hospital to address this issue, implement stricter guidelines on noise levels around patient rooms, and ensure that conversations at the nurses’ station remain at a respectful volume.

Patients come to the hospital to recover and should not be forced to endure a sleepless, restless night due to loud chatter. The professionalism of the healthcare team is reflected not only in their medical expertise but also in how they conduct themselves throughout their shifts, including their awareness of how their actions impact the patients they are there to serve. Thank you for considering this feedback, and I hope it leads to necessary changes that will improve the experience for future patients and their families.

For reference this was the nurse station right outside of room 1407 on the first floor on the night of 10/24/24.

The extremely intelligent, compassionate and professionals at New River Valley Medical Center saved my life.
The staff of the ER, the cardiac Cath Lab, and the ICU are outstanding, very well trained professionals.
Wonderful communication skills with empathy and compassion.
Shout out to the nurses in the ER in the ICU.
ICU housekeeping did a fine job daily with my room.
And last, but not least the kitchen staff does a fantastic job.
They make a cardiac diet, tasty and enjoyable.

UPDATE: Now Carilion has harassed and called me multiple times to get me to take down my review. There is literally nothing that can be done to rectify my experiences at this hospital.

This has to be one of the worst ER's in the area. I've had the pleasure of visiting this ER about 10 times just in 2024 due to gastroparesis and symptoms of the like. Every visit goes the same; rude nurses, doctors who act like they carry the world on their shoulders but lack empathy and knowledge about what is actually going on. This hospital also ran tests I did NOT authorize, resulting in additional charges. I rotted in the ER in writhing pain and constant vomiting that had exceeded 24 hours with nothing more than fluids and Zofran.

Eventually I was admitted for treatment/symptom management. The nurses on that side were wonderful and very compassionate towards me and my health concerns. The doctor on the other hand was crude, short and told me I was a liar to my face. Don't know his name but he was a small white guy and bald. At that point I found out he had ran tests without my knowledge or agreement. He also tried telling me I needed more scans and other tests done that were not even remotely related to what I was going through. I was made out as a hypochondriac, and was denied descent human interaction about what was going on medically.

I had to insist on a discharge. This hasn't been the only ER visit that I've experienced here. I went to the ER for four days with constant symptoms of dehydration and vomiting before they decided to admit me (February 2024 visits). Every single time the ER nurses and doctors make patients feel like they are a burden and taking up space. Where's the empathy? Compassion?

Ended up going to my primary care physician when my health was not taken seriously at the ER. They managed to do more for me in 10 mins than than CNRVMC "tried" to do in the 3 days I was there. Unless your actively dying/bleeding out, go elsewhere.

My daughter was in the ER very sick with a severe headache, severe cough, and feeling over all very sick on 9/30/24. She was there 5 hours and was never put in a bed. She was made to sit in the waiting room and only went back for a chest xray. The dr didn't discuss the xray with her. She received an email and got her results on my chart. They eventually gave her some OTC medication for her headache at time of discharge. The only diagnostics done was the xray and a covid swab. No blood work. They even checked her vitals in the waiting room. This was a very negative experience and we will never use radford ER again.

Absolutely one of the worst experiences I have ever had. Brought my mother to the ER where they decided to keep her over night. She wasn’t given a real room and only an ER room. She had many tests done and none of the nurses knew anything about when those results would be back. The only nurse who actually knew what was going on and what she was doing was the night nurse Caitlyn. All of the other ER nurses caused my mother excruciating pain by sticking her veins multiple times trying to draw blood. Any other nurse other than Caitlyn that we asked questions too had the same response, “I’m not sure I’ll have to ask your head nurse”. We were never told who the head nurse was and truthfully are unsure if we ever even met her. Staff is incredibly rude. In the first 24 hours of being here she never saw a doctor once. She requested lunch twice because she was not fed and they would not bring her anything to eat. Will be going to Lewis Gale next time. Terrible hospital.

Staff, nurses was great. Social worker was probably the most unhelpful, hateful person I have dealt with. No she isn’t supposed to make recommendations for a patient but agreeing with someone that cannot walk on their own, take care of themselves that it’s ok to sleep in their car knowing the patients house is unfit to live in. Basically it was I need this room and unless you pay for this room go wherever so I do not have to deal with you. Everyone but the social worker gets an A. Hopefully in the future this lady can work more for the family than the corporate industry.

Had to go here and found many great staff members to write about. I was most impressed by Dylan on 09/13/24. He deserves the Daisy Award for his commitment to excellence in the most lowest of times in a persons life.
